그림 깨우기: 크리스토프 루크헤베를레

What does it mean to “wake up” a picture? The act of “waking up” a subject is often interpreted as an act of bringing it out of a dormant or dreaming state or enlightening the subject on a forgotten memory or a novel feeling. How then, does one go about waking up a picture, trapped unmoving on paper or within the rectangular frame of a canvas? This November, the exhibition Waking Up the Pictures: Christoph Ruckhäberle is presented at The Seouliteum in Seongsu-dong. Introducing the works of German artist Christoph Ruckhäberle, the pictorial elements in his works, such as points, lines, planes, and colors, wake up and visually come to life through repetition, to stir new sensations in viewers. The title of the exhibition, “Waking Up the Pictures,” has profound ties to the practices and relentless experiments characteristic of the artist’s creative process. Recognized in the contemporary art world as one of the artists of the New Leipzig School, Ruckhäberle has built an eclectic oeuvre marked by the experimental placement, juxtaposition, superimposition, and repetition of diverse elements that freely traverse dimensions and boundaries. Influenced by a wide range of art genres and methodologies, from paintings to sculptures and traditional woodcut prints silkscreens, he takes his images beyond the canvas and into the three-dimensional space, challenging conventional modes of artistic expression and broadening his spectrum of work. As linear abstractions in his works attain three-dimensionality outside the canvas, lines of vivid colors go on to fill the exhibition space and their repeated patterns and movement serve as channels to guide viewers into visual fantasy. This creative act of “waking up the pictures” reaches beyond mere semiotic meanings inherent in the paintings to maximizes the immersive experience of the images and stir our synesthetic senses, thereby drawing art into life, and life into art. Amassing over 160 works by Ruckhäberle as the artist’s first large-scale solo exhibition in Korea, Waking Up the Pictures: Christoph Ruckhäberle seeks to shed light on the artist’s body of work, which not only flaunts dynamic spatiality as it deviates from the planar frame, but also harbors design elements and art historical narratives. This exhibition, in which pictures dancingly come to life as they escape their rectangular frames, is expected to take sensory delight to a whole new level. 그림을 ‘깨운다(waking up)’는 것은 어떤 의미일까? ‘깨운다’는 행위는 흔히 어떠한 대상을 잠에서, 혹은 꿈에서, 또는 잊었던 기억이나 새로운 감정을 일깨우는 것으로 해석되곤 한다. 그렇다면 종이와 캔버스의 네모난 틀 속, 하나의 이미지로 정지된 채 갇혀 있는 그림을 어떻게 깨운다는 것일까? 2023년 11월 성수동 더 서울라이티움에서 개최되는 展에서는 그림을 구상하는 모든 요소들 점, 선, 면, 그리고 다채로운 색들을 깨우고, 반복되는 시각 적 생동감과 즐거움을 통해 새로운 감각을 일깨워 줄 독일 작가 크리스토프 루크헤베를레의 작품을 소개한다. ‘그림 깨우기’라는 이번 전시의 명칭은 크리스토프가 작가로서 작업 과정에서 행해온 예술적 실행, 그리고 끊임없는 실험과 깊게 관련되어 있다. 신(新) 라이프치히 화파의 선두주자로서 현대 미술계가 주목하고 있는 작가는 작품 속 등장하는 다양한 요소들의 실험적 배치와 병치, 중첩과 반복을 통해 차원과 경계를 자유롭게 넘나드는 독특한 예술세계를 구축해왔다. 회화, 조각, 전통 목판 인쇄등 광범위한 예술 형식과 작업 방식에 영향을 받은 그는 이를 캔버스를 넘어선 공간으로 확장하여 기존의 형식적인 미술 표현방식에 대한 고정관념을 깨고 작업의 스펙트럼을 넓힌다. 작품 속 직선적인 추상은 캔버스 밖 조형물이 되며, 생생한 색감의 선들은 공간을 채워 나가고, 반복되는 패턴과 움직임은 관람객을 시각적 판타지로 이끄는 통로가 된다. ‘그림 깨우기’라는 작가의 작업적 행위는 순수회화가 지닌 단순한 기호학적 의미를 넘어 이미지가 선사할 수 있는 몰입적 경험을 극대화하고, 우리의 공감각을 일깨워 예술을 삶 속으로, 삶을 예술 속으로 끌어들인다. 크리스토프 루크헤베를레의 작품 160여 점이 국내에서 처음으로 한자리에 선보이는 展은 평면적인 틀에서 벗어난 역동적인 공간감 뿐만 아니라 디자인적 요소, 미술사적 서사를 모두 갖춘 그의 예술세계를 조명하고자 한다. 사각의 틀을 넘어 생생한 움직임으로 깨어나 숨 쉬는 이번 전시를 통해 새로운 차원에서 느껴지는 감각의 환희를 우리 모두가 경험할 수 있기를 기대한다.
